Sport at Avening

We are very proud of our sporting tradition at Avening Primary School. Our Subject Leader, Mr Mark Wilkinson, is a PE specialist, who plays a key role in promoting sport throughout the school – both in terms of curriculum and extra-curricular provision.

As well as PE activities (including swimming lessons for children from Year 3 to Year 5, and some Year 6 non/early swimmers), we have an annual residential for Years 5 and 6, with alternate Water Sports and Outdoor Pursuits; an annual Sports Day; and lots of extra-curricular sports clubs, including Tag Rugby, Cross-Country, Football, Netball, Cricket and KS1 Multi-Skills and Dance clubs.

Despite our small size, the school regularly performs well in inter-school tournaments. Recent successes include the Stroud Area Year 3/4 Tag Rugby league, SWR Cluster Sports Hall Athletics competition, SWR Cluster Tag Rugby tournament, the Year 3/4 Stroud Football league, the Cotswold Schools Netball, SWR Cluster Rounders and Cirencester Year 3/4 Tag Rugby tournaments. Many children from our school qualify for Area Sports each year. We are proud of our sporting triumphs. We are also keen to encourage children to participate in events in a sporting fashion, showing respect for others at all times; our children are regularly complimented for their good behaviour at local events and competitions.

We have been awarded the School Games Gold Kite Mark for the last few years as recognition of our commitment to sport - a great achievement, which reflects the many sporting opportunities the children at Avening Primary enjoy!
