The Kestrels really enjoyed visiting Copsegrove Farm to study physical and human features among other things!
Bill Church, a fantastic storyteller, visited the school to tell everyone a Christmas story. Everyone was completely engaged in his story.
Everyone Loves a Baby!
The Eagles and the Kestrels performed a fantastic nativity for the rest of the school community. They really enjoyed performing and aspired to do their best.
Trip to Tewkesbury
The Kestrels had a fantastic trip to see houses that are older than the Fire of London. It was really interesting to see how people would have lived and spot how their houses were different to ours.
We were very luckily that the police were able to visit school to tell us about the job they do.
The Owls visited PGL at Torrington, Devon where they were able to develop their REACH learning skills in a variety of different situations. They also had huge amounts of fun!

Sponsored Walk 2019
The whole school enjoyed the beautiful local countryside as they made their way around Avening on the sponsored walk. Everyone enjoyed the chance to be outside in the lovely weather and recognise the health benefits of different forms of exercise.
District Sports 2019
Everyone competed in athletic events and represented the school brilliantly.
The Hawks had the opportunity to compete against other local schools in an athletics competition. Everyone enjoyed aiming for their personal best.
Active Council Trip
The Active Council enjoyed a trip to SWR as a reward for promoting healthy lifestyles at Avening School.
Talent Show 2019
The pupils of Avening School took the opportunity to entertain their classmates by performing in the Avening's Got Talent 2019'. Everyone was so impressed by the talents on show and had a fantastic afternoon!
The Hawks visited the Roman town of Isca to learn more about the experience of people living in the Roman Empire.
Key Stage 2 put on a fantastic performance for everyone at Christmas telling the story of Scrooge. Their singing, acting and enthusiasm was a joy to see and everyone should be very proud of their efforts.
The Hawks really enjoyed a taster session learning martial art skills from a coach.
Stone Age Day
The Hawks had a fantastic Stone Age Day at Copsegrove farm foraging for food, pressing apples, whittling and making a roundhouse. A great trip!
The West Midlands Air Ambulance visited school today to help everyone learn about the important job they do. Everyone enjoyed sitting in the pilot's seat.

Gloucestershire Active Schools Awards
We were shortlisted for 2 awards; The LOC Award for Young Volunteers and The engagement of all young people in physical activity. We were very proud to be shortlisted with some other fantastic schools and delighted when Fleur won the award for volunteering!

Sports Morning 2018
Sports morning was a great success - congratulations to our new champions - Jupiter!
Jack Rutter, captain of the England disabled football team, visited school to lead an active afternoon and run an inspiration assembly.
The Hawks enjoyed competing against other local schools and applying their cricket skills to a game situation. It all took place in the beautiful surroundings of Frocester Cricket Club.
24 pupils took part in Area Sports against the best athletes from the other districts. Everyone worked hard to do their best and 4 children achieved 3rd place in their event.
Active Summer Festival
We were invited to visit Hartpury College to try out lots of active games. Everyone really enjoyed it. Thank you to Ned and Freddie for taking the photos.
Young Scientist Day
Some of the Owls went to Cheltenham to take part in a science day as part of the Science Festival.
Premier League Trophy Assembly!
We had an assembly to learn about being active and meet the trophy for the first time.

Kwik Cricket Festival
The Hawks enjoyed taking part in a cricket festival at SWR to learn lots of new skills.

As part of our RE topic Rev Gerald talked to the pupils in class and then took everyone to the church.
Pupils entertained the rest of the school with their talents of comedy, magic, dancing, singing and drumming!
Sport Relief 2018
Everyone took part in our Sport Relief Challenge completing a variety of steps including skipping steps, sidesteps, jumping steps, backward steps and silly steps!
From Source to Severn
As part of their topic the Hawks followed the stream outside school from the source all the way to where it meets the Severn.
Gymnastics at Sir William Romney's
The Hawks took part in a gymnastics competition against other local schools. They were able to apply their learning in PE lessons to a competitive situation. One of our teams came second and another team came first!
Trip to FGR
The Hawks had a fabulous trip to FGR. They learnt vegan cooking, football skills and about sustainability.
The Hawks designed and cooked a healthy meal as part of their topic. They learnt new skills for cutting with a sharp knife and how to prepare food hygienically.
Football at Kingshill
2 teams took part in a football tournament for girls at Kingshill School against other local schools. The development team scored their first ever goal and the other team finished with a bronze medal!
World 5000m Challenge
Everyone took part in the World 5000m Challenge and collaborated superbly to set their personal best times. Watch out for their improvements later in the year.
Cheltenham Cricket Festival
Some of the Hawks and Owls enjoyed a day of coaching and spectating as Gloucestershire beat Glamorgan.
The Hawks really enjoyed the opportunity to apply their cricket skills in a game situation.
The Hawks had an inspiring trip to the Cheltenham Science Festival where they got to experience many exciting resources such as 3D printing pens! They also had a fabulous talk about anatomy.
District Sports 2017
The Hawks and Owls all took part in the athletics competition against other local schools. Everyone showed superb levels of determination and perseverance in their performances.
The Hawks took part in a Quadkids competition at SWR School. Everyone took part as an athlete, organiser or part of the media team. It was a really enjoyable event!
Easter Egg Hunt 2017
The children had a lovely time hunting for eggs in the sunny school garden.
The Hawks wanted a Roman day to finish their topic this term. They looked fabulous in their Roman costumes and especially enjoyed the feast. They also learnt to count in Latin and name the days of the week.
Tag Rugby Festival
The Hawks took part in a fantastic rugby festival in Cirencester. They applied the skills they had been learning in PE lessons and performed really well.
World Book Day 2
Sue Wong-Walsh came into school and took some fantastic photos of our Harry Potter-themed World Book Day.
Roman trip to Caerleon
The Hawks continued their learning about Roman Britain by visiting Caerleon. They were able to look around the barracks, amphitheater and baths. It was fabulous to see all of the real Roman artefacts.
Young Voices 2017
Thirty children and six staff went to the NEC in Birmingham to take part in Young Voices.

Stone Age to Iron Age Day
The Hawks had the opportunity to try out some of the skills they had been learning about in their topic. Everyone had a fantastic time. Isaac's Dad and Ollie's Mum were really kind to give up their time and help.
World 5000m Challenge
The pupils at Avening School all took part in the World 5000m Challenge. In teams of 10 they raced against the clock to cover the distance as quickly as possible. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to be more active during the day.
Share and Learn
The Hawks have been enjoying their Share and Learn tasks and have produced some fabulous Stone Age models.
Team Cross Country
2 teams took part in the team cross country at Kingshill School. The weather was lovely and everyone did their best and really enjoyed the experience.
The Year 3 children have been learning cookery skills while they were making delicious cookies.
The Year 4 children have been learning new skills at South Cerney. Everyone really enjoyed being active on the water.
Owls visit to the Black Country Museum
The Owls visited the Black Country Living Museum as part of their 'Industry' topic.
The Hawks have been learning about sources of evidence historians use to find out about the past. They had an archaeological dig and made some fantastic discoveries!
Trip to Avebury
The Hawks enjoyed a fantastic trip to Avebury to begin their topic on the Stone Age to Iron Age. They met a Bronze Age man who explained all of the clever tools he used.
Tour of Britatin
The Activity Council went to Selsley Hill to support the Tour of Britain. They really enjoyed cheering on all of the cyclists and having the opportunity to spot Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish!

Ancient Greek Day
The Hawks finished their topic about the Olympics and ancient Greece by having a dressing up day. They prepared a Greek feast and were even lucky enough to have some Greek weather!
Cricket in Cheltenham
Some children watched Gloucestershire play Essex in Cheltenham and took part in some cricket activities.
After a week celebrating the Olympic Games in Rio we took part in our own Avening Olympics. Everyone enjoyed being an athlete or running an event. Thank you to Lily, Rufus and Archie for being our photographers.

Residential to Minehead
The Owls really enjoyed their residential to Minehead. They took part in some great activities and even the weather brightened up for them!
The Hawks visited the Science Festival in Cheltenham and were inspired by all of the fantastic displays. They learnt about their sensational senses.
David Abrutat, a British hand cyclist, came into school to inspire the children to exercise and be healthy. Everyone had an enjoyable afternoon and were feeling good (as well as a little tired!) by the end.
Dr Who visited Avening to narrate the Owls' assembly. They demonstrated all their fantastic learning from this year.
Quicksticks Hockey Finals
The hockey team took part in the finals at Cheltenham College. They really enjoyed their day and meeting an Olympic medalist.
Medieval Banquet - Eagles and Kestrels
The Eagles and Kestrels held a fabulous Medieval Banquet. There was music, dancing, jousting and delicious food.
The Hawks enjoyed performing their class assembly to their parents explaining everything they have learnt this term.

Avening School was inspired by the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and took part in a day of maths challenges. Everyone enjoyed solving their problems to complete the Golden Ticket!
Kestrels and Eagles visit Chepstow Castle
As part of their 'Dungeons and Dragons' topic, the Eagles and Kestrels visited Chepstow Castle.

Source to Severn
The Hawks followed the stream that travels through the school grounds from the source all the way to the Severn. It was amazing trip where everyone got to see real meanders, confluences and other river features.
The Hawks are learning about rivers this term. They began their topic by making their own river.
Young Voices 2016
A fantastic evening in Birmingham, singing in the largest school choir in the world!
The Hawks applied the gymnastic skills they have been learning in PE to a competition at SWR.
A Tale of Two Birthdays

Non-Uniform Day for the Library
The children dressed up as characters from their favourite books to raise money to buy new books for the school library.
The Hawks have been learning about how the skeleton protects the internal organs. They all had a go at protecting teacakes with a variety of success!
Farm to Fork
The Hawks visited Tesco in Tetbury to learn about where food comes from and the journey it takes to their plates.
A dentist visited the Hawks to teach them about teeth and dental hygiene. Everyone learnt how to make good choices that will help them look after their teeth.
Rugby World Cup
Avening represented Wales in a Tag-Rugby World Cup to celebrate the start of the real tournament. 36 teams took part and a 3rd place finish was a great achievement. They even got to meet Philippa Tuttiett who represents Wales!
Year 6 Celebration Meal
To celebrate their time at Avening School the Year 6 children had the opportunity to cook and eat a meal together. Mrs Wilkinson and her team of helpers worked really hard to help them create their delicious meal.
A Day at the Cricket
Some of the Hawks and the Owls had a really enjoyable day at Cheltenham College watching Gloucestershire play cricket and developing their own skills.
Tour de Avening!
The Hawks wanted to bring their bikes to school as part of their topic about the Tour de France. They really enjoyed learning new cycling skills with Mrs Jordan.

Three and a half miles through the beautiful Avening countryside.
Residential - Day One
The Owls went to South Cerney Outdoor Education Centre for a 3 day residential visit in June 2015.
Year 2 Cluster Sports
The Year 2 children went to Brimscombe School for the annual cluster sports event.
The children took part in District Sports competing in a variety of athletics events against other local schools.
Sula's Dad is a parachute instructor in the RAF. We were really lucky that he was able to come into school to talk about his job.
The Owls performed their assembly brilliantly demonstrating all of their learning this year.
The Hawks visited Copsegrove Farm to learn about food miles and habitats. There was also time for some cooking!
Forest Green Rovers
The Hawks went on a trip to Forest Green Rovers to learn about sustainable energy, They also got to train on the pitch next to the first team!
Reading Games and Story-Sharing in the Eagles
Parents came in to play reading games and share stories with the children in the Eagles clas.
Avening School finished the term with the annual talent show. The children and staff were thoroughly entertained by the different acts who put their all into their performances.
Everyone took part in our Easter Assembly and told part of the Easter story. After discussing new life we were extremely fortunate to have an Easter egg hunt.
The Hawks all dressed as Romans and enjoyed a Roman feast. It was a wonderful end to a fantastic topic.

The Hawks visited Caerleon to learn more about the Romans. Everyone had a fantastic time and learnt such a lot.
The Hawks have created a magnificent Roman Town as part of their topic this term. A great effort was made by everyone.
One of our playgrounds has been recently refurbished, much to the delight of the children!
Country Dancing with Mrs Redpath
The Kestrels learnt some country dancing with Mrs Redpath - Avening School's Country Dancing Queen!
Y1 and Y2 visit to Kemble Airport
Y1 and Y2 visited Kemble Airport as part of their topic on 'Flight'.
The Hawks saw some prehistoric pottery on their trip to Avebury and decided to make their own. Mrs Cornelius was able to help teach them how to make coil pots and decorate them with natural tools.
The Hawks Visit Avebury
As part of their topic on the Stone Age the Hawks went on a trip to Avebury. They were able to handle real Stone Age artefacts and were inspired by the stone circle. They also walked from Avebury to Silbury Hill and thought about the possible reasons for it being built.
Summer Fete 2014
A fabulous day - but how it rained!! Almost £1,800 was raised which is incredible.
Party at Rev Celia's
Rev Celia very kindly invited the Hawks for a sports party at her house as an end of year treat.
Everyone enjoyed working in their houses to learn about different countries from around the world.
Area Sports 2014
Our fabulous athletes had a very enjoyable and successful time at Area Sports. They all gave their best and enjoyed competing against all of the other schools.
Choir at the War Memorial
Choir at the War Memorial – Friday 13 June, 1:45 pm Key Stage 2 were joined by the choir from Woodchester School and Father Peter from the church to sing around the war memorial, as an act of commemoration to mark the First World War Centenary. The children sang together and reciting poems in what was a moving tribute to mark this signifcant milestone in world history.
Betty Bear goes to Spain
Betty Bear took a holiday and met Mrs Sollis, who works in the school office. What a coincidence!
District Sports 2014
We had another very successful District Sports and everyone enjoyed competing against the other schools in our cluster. Thank you to our roving reporters: George, Eric, Reevel and Arthur, for the fantastic pictures.
As the Owls prepare for this year's residential we thought we would put the photos up from last year so you can see the fun they had.
School Games Celebration Event
Some of the Hawks were lucky enough to perform their dance at the School Games Celebration Event at Gloucester Cathedral. They performed to hundreds of people and got to see some other fantastic groups.
The whole school showed great determination and resilience to complete the sponsored walk even though the weather was a little damp! Lots of children enjoyed the big puddles!
6 Hawks took part in a gymnastics competition. Everyone performed brilliantly and can identify how they will improve next time.
Cross Country Running
Children from our running club showed great determination in the cross country events.
Our football club were very lucky to have some football training with two players from Forest Green Rovers. Everyone had a great time and learnt some new skills.
Christmas Lunch 2013
Avening School enjoyed their wonderful Christmas dinner created by our wonderful cook, Mrs McPherson.

Sports Hall Athletics
Some of the Owls have been taking part in Sports Hall Athletics events. They all performed to their best which was great to see.
As part of Anti-Bullying Week we had a friendship day. The children spent all day in their House Teams learning all about friendship and helping each other. The day finished with a fantastic assembly when they were able to perform their friendship dances, playground games, songs and display which they had collaborated on.
The children who qualified from District Sports took part in Area Sports and competed brilliantly.

The Key Stage 2 children spent the day making Christmas mincemeat to sell the the parents.
